Introduction:

One of the most common questions I get asked about is “passwords.” It ranges from “I don’t have a password” to “I don’t know what my password is” to, worst case scenario – people using the same easy-to-crack password for everything.

Keeping track of passwords can feel like a daunting task, but it’s an essential part of staying safe online. With a little organization and a few helpful tools, you can create a system that’s simple, secure, and easy to manage.

This is why I wrote this guide. I hope it will help show you how to improve your password habits without the stress associated with remembering passwords.

Step 1: Understand Password Categories

I usually tell people to divide their websites that require passwords into 3 different categories.

1. Important Accounts:
– Examples: Banking, email, Medicare.
– Use strong, unique passwords for these.
2. Mid-Level Accounts:
– Examples: Online shopping, utility accounts.
– Use simpler passwords that still mix letters and numbers.
3. Low-Risk Accounts:
– Examples: Game websites, news websites or similar
– Use easy-to-remember passwords.

Step 2: Create Strong Passwords

1. Use a mix of:
– Uppercase letters (e.g., A, B, C).
– Lowercase letters (e.g., a, b, c).
– Numbers (e.g., 1, 2, 3).
– Special characters (e.g., !, $, %).
2. Example:
– For your bank: ‘$Secure2025Bank!’

Step 3: Store Passwords Safely

1. Write your passwords in a notebook and keep it in a safe place.
2. Use a password manager app (e.g., LastPass or Dashlane).

Step 4: Avoid Common Mistakes

1. Don’t reuse passwords for multiple accounts. If you do ‘reuse” passwords, don’t use a password that you use for banking for an account that is significantly less important.
2. Avoid using your name, birthday, or common words like ‘password123.’

Step 5: Update Passwords Regularly

1. For important accounts, update passwords every 6-12 months.

Conclusion:

By following these steps, you can stay safe online with a password system that’s easy to manage. Strong passwords and a clear organization method will protect your important accounts and reduce frustration. If you ever feel unsure or overwhelmed, remember that help is just a question away.
